Coimbra

Coimbra is the city of Fado, the narrow streets, terraces everywhere and nice restaurants. Every evening you can enjoy live fado music. The University of Coimbra is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city is beautifully situated on the banks of the Mondego River. You can stroll for hours through the old city center, sometimes steeply uphill, after which you have a beautiful view.

The University of Coimbra is one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1290. The showpiece of the university is the library. Construction began in 1717, shortly after the king became wealthy from the gold and diamond mines found in Brazil. Today, more than 20,000 students study at the University, divided into 8 faculties.

Live Fado music can be heard every evening in different places. In Coimbra it is mainly played by men. It used to be a tradition to play at the bottom of the balcony in the evenings, to impress women they wanted to woo.
