Monastery of Bathalha

Monastery of Bathalha

You can already see it from the highway, the Monastery of Batalha. The building is one large work of art and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983. In 2007, like the church of Alcobaça, it was declared one of the seven wonders of Portugal.

In 1386, King John I ordered the monastery to be built, after the Portuguese had defeated the Castilians the previous year at the battle of Aljubarrota (batalha means "battle"). The monastery is officially named after the Blessed Virgin Mary because of this victory. Hence the name: Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória.

The Batalha Monastery is High Gothic, built from the late 1300s to the early 1500s. The Manueline decoration gets all the attention. Anuel style is characterized by complex and virtuoso decorations in portals and windows in which maritime elements and references to the voyages of discovery are mixed with sculptures of nature, wild animals, birds and flowers. It is a beautiful complex and definitely worth a visit.
