Alcobaça
The name Alcobaça is derived from the two rivers Alcoa and Baca. The city is located in a beautiful green valley where you can enjoy walking. Alcobaça is particularly known for its impressive church and monastery, Mosteiro de Santa Maria. The 1st king of Portugal, Alfonso I, had the church built in 1153.
The Church and the Monastery are the first Gothic buildings in Portugal. Due to its artistic, cultural and historical relevance, the complex was included in UNESCO's World Heritage List. And the complex was also declared one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal in 2007.
The tombs of Pedro and Inês (the Portuguese Romeo & Juliet) are spectacular. When Inês was murdered, he had it made for her in the church of Alcobaça. Pedro ensured that after his death he was buried in a similar tomb next to Inês's.
Near the church is the Jardim do Amor, a romantically landscaped garden with a monument that evokes the immortal love of Pedro and Inês.
